Manchester United have announced the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 33-year-old, who signed for the club from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, has left Old Trafford after six hugely successful years in which he was crowned the world’s best player.

Ronaldo won three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and one Champions League title with United. He scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club, and was a major part of United’s dominance of English football over the past decade.

He also won the Ballon d’Or in 2008 and again in 2013, and was named European Footballer of the Year in 2008, becoming the first Manchester United player to do so.

The Portuguese forward leaves United as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, and has set an example for future generations of footballers to aspire to.

Ronaldo said: “It has been an honor to play for Manchester United. I have had six special years at this club and I will never forget the great times we shared together. I want to thank the fans, staff and players for their support and I wish them all the best in the future.”

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Cristiano has been an outstanding player for Manchester United and he will be remembered as one of the greats. We wish him all the best in his future career.”
